Hair Shed or Hair Loss?
Research on healthy hair care tells us that it is normal to shed between 50 to 125 strands of hair a day. Because each individual is different, you could potentially fall on the low or high end of this range. However, if you are experiencing significantly more than this, you should perhaps consult your doctor to determine the cause. Common reasons for excessive hair shedding include:
- Emotional and physical stress
- Changes in diet
- Certain prescription drugs
Thus, if none of these conditions apply to you, you should seriously consider seeking professional help. Ironically, it can be easy to confuse hair shedding for actual hair loss. While, excessive hair shedding (often temporary) may be a symptom of hair loss (often permanent), hair loss is generally caused by something that prevents hair from growing, such as:
- DNA/hereditary hair loss
- Prescription drugs and treatments
- Harsh hair care products
- Hairstyles that pull on the hair
Yep, you read that right! Harsh hair care products can be a catalyst for hair loss. The good news is that by using hair care products made with quality ingredients, you could significantly decrease your likelihood of contributing to such hair issues. For example, a common complaint with coarse natural hair is the inability to comb or brush through the hair without actually pulling the hair. Hence, the use of products with a lot of slip (or ability to allow a comb or brush to glide through your hair) is an absolute must. However, not all products are created the same, and sometimes products that provide great slip are not actually good for those precious tresses.
We go about slathering on products that may coat the hair, but work against us by blocking needed moisture and thus further dry out our hair. When it's time to style our hair, so thirsty for moisture that it may have absorbed the product we used, but it may not be enough to safely allow for continued styling and thus, we may resort to pulling our hair in addition to the natural shed we experience during the styling process (creating what you might believe to be excessive hair shedding). We (The Hair Bakery) believe that a good hair product can do the "heavy lifting" of detangling, versus you trying to force your hair to detangle with styling utensils (i.e. brush, wide-tooth comb, etc.) and a pile up of unhealthy products on your hair. Many hair care products on the market today may lack the ability to provide needed moisture to combat dryness. Even though they may provide a lot of "slip" and give the illusion of detangling, your hair, in face, may be starving for moisture.
